UST Replacement at University of Washington Motor Pool
The Motor Pool site is very small and heavily used for service, renting, fueling, and parking passenger vehicles. The UST replacement project involved replacing the existing 11 USTs without undue impact to the operation of the Motor Pool. The work occurred during the summer break when Motor Pool usage was at a minimum. Substantial completion of the work before the beginning of the fall quarter was of paramount importance.
Five gasoline, two diesel, two motor oil and two hydraulic oil tanks, a fueling dispenser island, and an island canopy were removed and replaced by three gasoline/gasohol, one diesel, and two motor oil tanks, a dispenser island, and an island canopy. Excavation shoring was required to protect the existing building foundations and nearby roadways. New piping, electrical, and instrumentation was installed between the tanks, island, and motor pool building. The site drainage system was modified and the site concrete and asphalt concrete paving were restored. Excavation and disposal of petroleum-contaminated soil was required. In addition, dewatering during construction was required because the ground water level was approximately six feet below grade.
The two hydraulic oil tanks to be removed were located under the Motor Pool shop floor. Removal of the tanks and floor restoration were coordinated with shop operations and performed individually. All work was performed and completed within the allotted contract time.
